Duct tape, bailing wire, hot glue, and cardboard- America won WWII and sent men to the moon using those kinds of humble materials and raw ingenuity On Friday six teams of Mechanical Engineering students at Forsyth Tech made like MacGyver and set sail in their cardboard boat creations for the 2013 Forsyth Tech Cardboard Regatta. For 30 years Forsyth Tech students have been creating boats for the Strengths of Materials course. 2013′s regatta went off without a hitch.
All six teams successfully sailed around the three buoys in Belews Lake course and made it back to shore safely. The regatta project is worth 25% of the students’ grade this semester. The judges consisted of Forsyth Tech instructors, current and retired, and staff trained to grade this project.
Each boat was graded on four criteria:
- Construction of boat
- Appearance of boat
- Load-carrying ability of boat
- Log book, which documents in words and photos the strategy and process each team used to design and build their boat.
