The following was provided for your information by the Piedmont Down Syndrome Support Network
The Next Chapter Book Clubs sponsored by the Piedmont Down Syndrome Support Network needs a volunteer for its Monday night book club. The club meets weekly at Arby’s off North University from 6:30 – 7:30pm. A short training is required. They are also looking for someone to serve as a substitute as needed for any of their 4 clubs.
The Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) is a model community literacy program for people with intellectual disabilities (IDD) which is active in hundreds of towns in at least five countries. These clubs encourage friendship and lifelong learning within a community setting. A number of clubs were started in N.C. in 2012. The Piedmont Down Syndrome Support Network sponsors 4 clubs in Forsyth & Stokes Counties. Club members are adults with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (IDD) not just those who have Down syndrome.
Club members meet for 1 hour a week in a public location and read a book of their choice out loud to each other. Trained facilitators support readers of all levels and stimulate conversation about the books they read.
What people say about Newt Chapter Book Clubs:
• Members love them. They attend consistently. They make friends, develop confidence, & increase literacy skills.
• Facilitators say it is the “highlight” of their week.
• Host businesses look forward to the clubs meetings.
