The NC State Park system has declared 2014 the “Year of the Lepidoptera,” so SciWorks is celebrating all things butterfly with two special events. On Saturday, September 20, SciWorks will host a Butterfly Festival from 11:00am until 4:00pm Visitors of all ages will enjoy special activities including tips for butterfly gardening, a presentation about Monarch butterfly migration and research, face-painting, arts and crafts, and a walk-in vivarium with more than 100 live butterflies.

On Sunday, September 21, the butterfly vivarium will be open to visitors from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. At 3:00 p.m., SciWorks will have a mass release of Monarch butterflies tagged for scientific research. Members of the general public who have “adopted” a Monarch as part of SciWorks’ “Adopt-and-Release-a-Butterfly” fundraiser will count down and release all 150 tagged butterflies at once, and SciWorks’ visitors will be able to watch the release. For more information about these events or to find out how to “adopt” a butterfly and take part in the mass release, visit HERE.
