The inaugural Second Sundays on 4th event returns this Sunday to downtown Winston-Salem. This free family-friendly outdoor event series, every second Sunday of the month from May to October from 3-6 pm, is presented by Flow Automotive and supported by a number of other local sponsors. Each event includes two free bands, as well as a kids’ zone (sponsored by Summit School) with free bounce houses, crafts and games. A different local non-profit will also be featured at each event.
“I love this event because it’s great for the whole community,” said Cary Clifford, one of the event organizers; she runs Camino Bakery in downtown Winston-Salem. “It’s been a great thing that’s come out of friendship of business owners on the block.”
a/perture cinema’s Lawren Desai agrees. “We literally get to put on a party with great music, for kids and adults, six times a year, on an awesome block of 4th Street…and it’s free!”
The events are on 4th Street between Cherry and Marshall Streets, and, courtesy of First Presbyterian Church, there will be free parking during each of the SSO4 events in any of the nearby First Presbyterian parking lots. In conjunction with Second Sundays, a/perture cinemas will be showing a special series of vintage cartoons at 2pm on those dates (movies $5).
Clifford mentioned her favorite part is booking musical guests. This Sunday, local North Carolina act Bombadil will take the stage. Desai stated how important it was for all the business owners to make downtown a place where everybody feels welcomed.
Tim Beeman, host of The Less desirables, summed up SSO4 by saying: “It’s a community event to bring families downtown, have a good time, all with great music. Fun and food!”
