The Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts and the Visual Arts Program at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNSCA) announce the recipients of the 2014 Kenan Fellowships at Penland School of Crafts. Fellowship recipients are recent graduates of the UNCSA Visual Arts Program. The Kenan Fellows will study at summer workshops at Penland and will take classes in diverse media such as metals, glass, printmaking, photography, iron, painting and felted wool sculpture.
The UNCSA high school graduates who are 2014 recipients of the Kenan Fellowships at Penland School of Crafts are:
Astrid Blurr (2014) will study drawing (“Process, Paint, & Performance”) with instructor Michael Dixon;
Forest Horsley (2014) will study printmaking (“Ready, Set, Relief!”) with instructor Kristen Martincic;
Mazena Puksto (2010) will study Hot Glass (“Some Assembly Required”) with instructors Joe BenVenuto & David Walters;
Mikaela Darnell (2014) will study drawing (“Process, Paint, & Performance”) with instructor Michael Dixon;
Cassie Sun (2014) will study metals (“Surface & Pattern”) with instructor Linda Threadgill;
Sara Behnke (2014) will study mixed media (“Finding Voice”) with instructor Hiroyuki Hamada;
Jennifer Xiao (2014) will study wood (“The Thick Skin: Unlocking the Potential of Cork”) with instructor Daniel Michalik;
Madeleine Popkin (2014) will study clay (“Nature Nurture”) with instructor Thaddeus Erdahl;
Rachel Pendergrass (2013) will study clay (“Nature Nurture”) with instructor Thaddeus Erdahl;
Kate Archer (2010) will study printmaking (“Screenprinting with a Fellow Who Makes Fun Rock Concert Posters”) with instructor Jay Ryan.
Penland School of Crafts is an international center for craft education located in Penland, N.C. in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Penland operates year-round providing opportunity to study in one-, two-, and eight-week workshops in fifteen professional teaching studios. Residential workshops include books and paper, clay, drawing and painting, glass, iron, letterpress, metals, printmaking, photography, textiles, wood and other media.
The Kenan Fellowships at Penland School of Crafts seek to promote life-long learning, stimulate experimentation and skill development, extend UNCSA students’ and artists’ career development opportunities through Penland’s network of peer professionals and share Penland’s model educational learning environment.
“The Visual Arts faculty is thrilled for our alumni that have been provided with this gracious opportunity. The Kenan Fellowship at Penland is an enormous gift to our program and a significant catalyst in expanding the artistic endeavors of our young alumni,” said UNCSA Visual Arts Director Will Taylor.
