UPDATED: WSPD Officer Shot Overnight on Anson St.

According to the WSPD, an officer was shot in the left bicep early Sunday morning while responding to a reported assault. Officer J. Barnes received a non-life -threatening wound and was transported to the hospital. The officers did not return fire and the suspect was later taken into custody.

Officer Barnes and Office C. Arauz responded to a report of an assault on a female at 615 Anson St. at approximately 3:15am. Officers were informed that there was possibly a man inside of the unit with a gun. After Officer Barnes was shot additional back up units from the WSPD arrived, at which time the suspect was arrested.

 

UPDATE 5:49pm:

 

When patrol officers arrived at the scene on Anson Street, an officer knocked on the front door of the apartment, announced that officers were on the scene, then instructed the occupants of the apartment to open the door. While the officers were standing outside waiting for a response Carmelo Santiago-Oliva fired four shots through the closed front door of the apartment unit. Officer J.D. Barnes was struck one time in the left bicep.

Officer Barnes was evacuated from the scene and the remaining officers established a perimeter around the apartment. After approximately 10 minutes of negotiations, Carmelo Oliva exited the apartment and surrendered to officers.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Investigators determined that prior to the arrival of the officers Carmelo Oliva was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife. During this domestic dispute, Carmelo Oliva physically assault his wife and discharged a handgun through a glass window of the apartment.

Officer J.D. Barnes was transported to Baptist Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his arm. Officer Barnes has been employed by the Winston-Salem Police Department since September of 2011.

No Winston-Salem Police Officers discharged their service weapon during this incident.

Carmelo Santiago-Oliva has been charged with two counts of Assault with a Firearm on a Law Enforcement Officer, Assault with a Deadly Weapon with the Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury and Assault on a Female. Carmelo Oliva is currently being held in the Forsyth County Detention Center with no bond allowed and a court date of April 10, 2014.
